The Importance of Sunglasses for Children

Do Kids Need Sunglasses?

Adults frequently think of sunglasses as a necessity while they’re driving, so they might not recognize how much children are affected by the sun’s rays. Whether at the beach, park, or in a car, children should wear sunglasses too for many of the same reasons.

Besides, kids love looking cool in those shades just like Mom and Dad, so it probably won’t be too much of a challenge to get your kids to wear sunglasses.

How Sunglasses Protect Children’s Eyes

While all adults should protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sunchildren should wear sunglasses early on in their lives as well. Cumulative exposure to the sun can damage the eyes, so sunglasses for children are important to protect their eyesight over time.

Harmful Effects of Sun to Eyes

Excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful to eyes in numerous ways. UV radiation may cause:

  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Keratitis, also known as corneal sunburn or snow blindness
  • Conjunctival cancers, such as ocular melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma on eyelids

When  you choose sunglasses for children or adults, select those with frames that are large enough to circle around your eyes, yet snug enough to hug your face. The better the sunglasses fit, the more they can keep the sun’s rays out.

Children’s eyes may be more susceptible to the sun’s rays because they spend more time outdoors than adults do. Another reason is that the lenses inside children’s eyes may be clearer than that of adults, enabling more sunlight to get in.

Explore Sunglasses for Children

Setting a good example by wearing sunglasses and applying sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun is a smart way to encourage your children to do the same.

Showing them all the fun options for sunglasses will help too. Step into one of our eye doctor’s offices in Flint, Fenton, Grand Blanc, Lapeer, or Oxford to have your children try on a few pairs of sunglasses. Just you watch: they might even slide on those shades and step out of the optometrist’s office with a strut.
