Our DoctorsSince 1940, Michigan Eye Institute has been one of the top eye care practices in the country. To help increase the level of ophthalmology services, we redefined the availability of eye care resources in our region by working with hospitals, teaching institutions, and primary care physicians. By fully integrating our practice, we have been able to provide our patients with examination, treatment, and optical services under one roof.

Throughout the years, our practice has grown and expanded. However, maintaining our tradition of excellence and taking care of you is still our top priority. Dr. Gary M. Keoleian specializes in laser cataract surgery, glaucoma, and comprehensive ophthalmology. Dr. Keoleian graduated with highest distinction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology & Zoology. After graduation, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Keoleian went on to a prestigious glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Medical School.

Dr. Keoleian is Board-Certified as a lifetime diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Currently, Dr. Keoleian is actively involved with patient care, resident education and clinical research. Through the years he has become a trusted source for presentations and publications in ophthalmology.

Dr. My Le Shaw specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. In addition to treating advanced glaucoma through traditional surgical methods, Dr. Shaw utilizes the latest in minimally invasive technology to treat mild to moderate forms of the disease.

Dr. Shaw earned two undergraduate degrees from the University of Washington. She graduated with distinction in biochemistry and American ethnic studies with a minor in chemistry. She received her Medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine while completing research about eye trauma mechanisms.

Following an internship in internal medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, she completed her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Kansas, where she served as Chief Resident and was also named resident of the year. She went on to complete a fellowship in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma at the renowned Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Shaw has presented her research involving optic nerve injury, Horner’s Syndrome and aniridic glaucoma at national ophthalmology meetings. Her research interests include evaluating outcomes of medical and surgical treatments for glaucoma. Dr. Shaw is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Glaucoma Research Foundation and the American Glaucoma Society. She is also an Associate Counselor for the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Dr. Tekiele earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois.

Following a hospital-based internship at the Cleveland Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Tekiele completed a residency in Family Practice Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham/The Medical Center. He then underwent specialized post-residency training in the areas of therapeutic laser therapy for the anterior segment and excimer laser vision correction at Northeastern University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Tekiele, III is board-certified in Optometry and was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham/The Medical Center and past Director of Cornea and Refractive Services at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Tekiele is a past President of the Birmingham Area Optometric Society in Birmingham, Alabama and past Chair of the Technology Task Force of the Alabama Optometric Association.

Dr. Ann Marie Kautz brings a wealth of optometric experience to Michigan Eye Institute. She graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University with Distinction, having received advanced training in pediatric eye care. She then went on to the Saginaw Veterans Administration Hospital for specialty training in ocular disease.

Following this advanced training, Dr. Kautz accepted a faculty position at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She served as both a clinical and laboratory instructor in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences. Dr. Kautz was also clinical instructor for practicing optometrists in continuing education workshops in New Zealand. She was responsible for teaching clinical techniques utilized in the detection of ocular disease.

Dr. Ann Marie Kautz fosters her interest in pediatric eye care as a member doctor of the public health initiative INFANTSEE, a program that provides a one time comprehensive eye assessment for infants in their first year of life. In addition to pediatrics, she has an interest in specialty contact lens fittings and primary care optometry. She has been an active member of the American Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association for 21 years.

Dr. Kirsten Donnellon graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology then continued her education at Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she obtained a second B.S. in Visual Science and her Doctorate in Optometry.

At the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Dr. Donnellon was awarded High Honors at graduation and was recognized for Clinical Excellence in Primary Care as well as Clinical Excellence in the Low Vision Internship at The William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Donnellon received clinical training in ocular disease at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA and the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Charleston, SC. Dr. Donnellon has worked side by side with ophthalmology co-managing ocular disease cases including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age related macular degeneration.

Dr. Donnellon has clinical experience fitting the latest contact lens designs and enjoys exploring new technologies within this field of optometry. She previously worked as the head of the pediatric vision center while in South Carolina managing many pediatric cases including amblyopia and strabismus. Dr. Donnellon enjoys working with pediatric patients and strives to promote prevention of ocular disease with early comprehensive eye exams for our young patients.

Dr. Nicholas J. Bruns graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry with high academic honors. Prior to his optometric education, he graduated cum laude from the honor's program at Central Michigan University where he studied biomedical science.

During his optometric education, Dr. Bruns completed internships at Great Lakes Eye Institute, Kresge Eye Institute, and the Grand Rapids VA hospital. While completing these internships, he received extensive training in ocular disease, contact lenses, and primary care. He was also able to work alongside multiple ophthalmologists with different specialties while providing pre and post-operative care.

Dr. Bruns is an active member of Michigan Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. At the Michigan Eye Institute he practices full scope optometry. He especially enjoys primary care for patients of all ages, ocular disease, and contact lenses including specialty contact lens fits.

Dr. Brian Mahalak specializes in comprehensive medical eye care and refractive surgical perioperative care. After completion of his undergraduate degree at Albion College, he attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and the Vision Science Graduate Research Program in Physiological Optics.

After graduation, Dr. Mahalak completed a residency in Family Practice Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham then served as Center Director for Eye Health Partners/Vision America of Montgomery, Alabama, where he directed clinic operations and specialized in ophthalmic surgical and ocular disease management.

Dr. Mahalak is Board-Certified in Optometry and is past President of the Alabama Optometric Association, an affiliate of the American Optometric Association. He has chaired multiple state-level committees and has lectured on ophthalmic surgery and disease management at multiple universities, state associations, hospital care systems, and educational seminars.
